THE country’s Thai
community came together to plant 67 trees at the biodiversity park at the
Berakas Forest Reserve.
The effort was in
support of the Heart of Borneo Initiative campaign of “Greening the City,
Saving The Planet: Making A Difference, One Tree At A Time” and to commemorate
the 67th birthday of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei
Darussalam.
At the scenic
biodiversity park, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya
bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary

While at the beach,
members of the Thai community planted 65 pine trees.
Phetcharatana said:
“Through today’s event, we, the Thai community, would like to honour His
Majesty’s 67th birthday by planting 67 trees.
“We support Brunei’s
Heart of Borneo Initiative campaign. We are the second group to have done this
after the HoB countries planted the trees on September 7. We feel privileged.
“This is the first
time we have organised this activity. We will continue to organise regular
activities to repay Brunei for its hospitality.
“This is the Asean
year, we want to build the bilateral ties between both countries.”
Describing the
relationship of both countries’ monarchs, he said: “It’s a very close
relationship.
“Last may, His Majesty
went to Thailand for the Water Summit, while in 2011, His Majesty the Sultan
and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam met with His Majesty King Bhumibol
Adulyadej of Thailand during an official visit.”
On cooperation, he
revealed that Thailand was in the final stage of drafting a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of agriculture and that it was
expected to be signed this year.
“There are still three
agreements (concerning labour affairs, human trafficking and culture
cooperation) that need to be worked out.
The MoU on agriculture
will cover, among others, land development, water management, fisheries,
technology transfer and training.
Meanwhile, on a
separate subject, Phetcharatana confirmed that Thai Prime Minister Yingluck
Shinawatra would be attending the Asean Summit next month.
“Prime Minister
Yingluck, who will be accompanied by 60 Thai delegates, will be in Brunei from
October 8-10.”

THE Thai Community of the Sultanate gives back in honour of His
Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's birthday by
planting 67 trees in support of the Heart of Borneo initiative and Brunei's
biodiversity.
The number of trees planted was to mark His Majesty's 67th birthday this year as members of the Thai community residing in Brunei personally planted them along the coast of the Berakas Forest Reserve yesterday morning.
In an interview with the Ambassador of Thailand to Brunei, His Excellency Apichart Phetcharatana (pic), this was a display of appreciation by over 3,000 Thai people who have resided in the Sultanate, some for more than 20 to 30 years.
Additionally, the trees were to support the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources' (MIPR) efforts under the Heart of Borneo initiative with the campaign 'Greening the city, saving the plan, making a difference, one tree at a time'.
Present as the guest of honour was the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, who officiated the planting of a 'Hopea odorata' tree, also known by its local name of Merawan Siputjantan. This tree was planted at the Biodiversity Park of the Berakas Forest Reserve.
Later on, members of the Thai community proceeded to plant a total of 67 'Casuarina equisetifolia' trees along the coast of the reserve. The trees are also known by its local name of Rulaut.
HE Ambassador Phetcharatana added that the tree species were recommended by the Forestry Department under MIPR as the Casuarina equisetifolia trees were chosen for its erosion prevention and in general, its wind breaking elements.
In the future, the ambassador hoped to organise more activities with the local Thai community by supporting notably causes and by giving back to the community.
He also mentioned their countdown to being part of the 30th National Day celebration next year, a significant and festive commemoration they would like to share.
Also attending yesterday's tree planting occasion were MIPR permanent secretary, Hjh Normah Suria Hayati Pehin Jawatan Dalam Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama Dr Hj Mohd Jamil Al Sufri, heads of departments, Forestry officers as well as members of the local Thai community. The Brunei Times
